New Delhi, April 7: Four candidates, including two IITians, from Rajasthan are among the top 10 who have cracked the civil services final examination 2018, the results of which were announced by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) this week.
While Kanishak Kataria, who hails from Jaipur, topped the prestigious examination, three others from the state named Akshat Jain, Shreyansh Kumath and Shubham Gupta bagged second, fourth and sixth positions, respectively.
The UPSC examination results were declared on Friday.
UPSC recommends 759 candidates for appointment to various civil services
As many as 10,65,552 candidates had applied for the civil services (preliminary) examination 2018 that was conducted on June 3 last year. However, of the total number of applicants, only 4,93,972 candidates actually sat for the examination and out of them only 10,468 candidates qualified for the written (main) examination. The written (main) test was held in September-October, 2018.
In the mains, as many as 1994 candidates qualified for the personality test, which was conducted in February-March this year. Of the 1994 candidates, UPSC recommended 759 for appointment to various civil services, including IAS, IPS and IFS. The 759 candidates comprise 577 men and 182 women.
About the toppers
26-year-old Kataria, who topped the examination, did his BTech in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay. He belongs to the Schedule Caste (SC) category. His optional subject in the examination was mathematics. It was his first attempt.
His father Sanwarmal Verma is also an IAS officer. Kataria, who was working in a multinational company in South Korea and Bengaluru, resigned from his job in 2017 to prepare for the UPSC exam.
23-year-old Jain, who also hails from the Pink City, cleared the examination in his second attempt. His father is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and his mother an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer. Jain did his BTech from IIT Guwahati.
25-year-old Gupta, also a Jaipur resident, is currently working as an Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS) officer. Son of a businessman, Gupta bagged sixth rank in the UPSC exam.
Two others from the state bag 98th and 207th positions
Besides the four toppers, Khushboo Lather and Akshay Kabra – both from Rajasthan – bagged 98th and 207th positions, respectively.
An MBA graduate, Lather had bagged 285th position in her previous UPSC exam attempt and was undergoing training as an IRS officer in Nagpur.
Kabra, a Jaipur resident, is a student of law.
