Civil Services 2018 results announced, IITian tops exam

New Delhi, April 6: The Union Public Service Commission on 5 April 2019 declared the final results of Civil Services Examination 2018. The commission has recommended 759 candidates, which includes 577 men and 182 women, for appointment to various services. Also, a total of 36 candidates with benchmark disability have been recommended in the premier examination.

The UPSC exam 2018 has been topped by a BTech student from IIT Bombay, Kanishak Kataria, and among women candidates, the topper is Srushti Jayant Deshmukh who secured 5th rank in the exam. Belonging to SC category, Kanishak Kataria had taken mathematics as his optional subject to pass the exam and he holds a BTech (Computer Science and Engineering) from the IIT.

And Srushti Jayant Deshmukh, the topper amongst women candidates has a BE (Chemical Engineering) from Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal, the statement issued by the commission said.

Significant number of women candidates with good ranks

The civil services exam this year saw 15 men and 10 women out of the top 25 candidates qualifying the exam. The commission had recommended 36 persons as candidates with benchmark disability – out of which 11 were orthopedically handicapped; 12 visually challenged, 11 hearing impaired and two with multiple disability.

Held on 3 June 2018, the civil services (preliminary) examination, saw a total of 4,93,972 candidates appearing in the exam out of 10,65,552 candidates who had actually applied. Out of which some 10,468 candidates qualified for the written examination, held in September-October, 2018. And some 1994 candidates reached the final stage of the exam, which is the personality test, held in February-March, 2019.

IITians increasingly opting for Civil Services

This year, the second rank holder in the country’s topmost exam also turned out to be an IITian. An engineering graduate from IIT Guwahati Akshat Jain, from Jaipur, whose father is an IPS officer, clinched the second rank.

The candidates from IITs have been increasingly topping the exam over time, and the trend of top engineering brains taking up civil services is not new. This may surprise many, considering engineering that too from an IIT promises the candidates a lucrative career in India or abroad in high end companies. And the stream involves a whole different set of skills and knowledge domain.

The service allocation to be filled this year includes 180 in IAS, 30 in IFS, 150 in IPS, 384 in Central Services Group ‘A’ and 68 candidates in Group ‘B’ services.
