‘One size fits all’ approach will not take us anywhere, says Venkaiah at 95th convocation of DU

NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 20: At the 95th annual convocation of the Delhi University, Vice President emphasised that the youth of India should be encouraged to think freely. He said, “We need to re-engineer our education system. ‘One size fits all’ approach will not take us anywhere. We have to encourage our young people to think freely. We cannot keep forcing the same syllabus on a student who excels in science and a student who is a savant in music.”

“Only half the time of a student should be spent in classrooms, the other half should be spent in the playground, in the society, in nature and in the open air. Only then will his or her education is complete,” the Vice President has been quoted as saying to a national daily.

While addressing the students at the convocation, Venkaiah said, “I urge students to not let your degrees and mark lists limit you. This is just your foundation. What you build from here, what you choose to be and do in life is totally up to you. Let nothing curb your dreams or restrict your thirst for excellence. India has undertaken a long journey in the field of education, from the Guru–Shishya Parampara of learning under the shadow of a tree to becoming the third largest in the world in the field of higher education, next to the US and China.”

Naidu praised DU’s special efforts for women education

The Vice President also appreciated the university’s efforts in nation building and giving more attention to women education. He said, “It is truly noteworthy that the vision and mission of Delhi University reflect its long-term commitment to nation-building and universal human values. The values of the university are reflected in its motto: ‘Nishtha Dhriti Satyam’, Dedication, Steadfastness and Truth. I am happy to know that Delhi University places great focus on educating young women. A number of brilliant young women won medals and prizes today. With universities like DU promoting women’s education, I am sure that the future of our country is secure.”

Naidu reminded the universities about their roles and responsibilities by telling them, “The responsibility to mould young people into productive, enlightened citizens lies with universities. India’s aim is inclusive and sustainable development. The path to reach this goal has to be paved by the enterprising, intelligent and resourceful youth.”

This year, Delhi University presented as many as 187 medals and sixteen prizes to students and degrees to a total of 584 students who were victorious in the exam held in 2017.
