NIT Srinagar orders suspension of classes, non-local students begin to vacate premises

New Delhi, August 3: The authorities at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus in Srinagar have ordered the suspension of classes till any further order. The non-local students have also started to leave from the premises. According to the sources, a total of 26 J-K SRTC buses reached the campus early morning that would take the students to Jammu.

“This is for information of all the students of the institute that the classwork for all courses stands suspended till further order. The above notice stands issues in accordance with the instructions received from the District administration Srinagar,” an order issued by NIT’s Registrar stated.

Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Shahid Chaudhary said, “apparently a miscommunication” soon after the NIT order citing “instructions” from the district administration. “In wake of unstoppable rumours, heads of all the institutions were advised in the day to remain careful. No advice/instructions for shutting down any institution. This NIT notice is apparently a miscommunication,” Chaudhary said on Twitter.

“We notify when we issue closure order. Our 900+ schools/KVs are open today. Objected to NIT claim of district administration directions to close the institute. Citing SM triggered panic among parents they sought transportation help for limited numbers. We assured full security in campus too. That’s all (sic),” he added.

Non-local students leave for home

The students of NIT Srinagar were waiting inside the campus for the busses with their luggage since early morning. “We saw the notification yesterday in our group about the class suspension and buses will arrive here in the morning to take us to Jammu. I am getting frequent calls from my family to come back home immediately. We have been informed by the staff here that buses will take us to Jammu,” a civil engineering student at the NIT campus from Andhra Pradesh has been quoted as saying to a national daily.

A faculty member told the media that non-local students are being ferried to Jammu. He said, “Local students living in hostels too have started going back home after yesterday’s order.”
