New Delhi, August 22: For admission to undergraduate medical courses, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) will be held only once in 2020. Just like JEE Main, there were talks of conducting NEET UG twice a year. However, NEET remains an annual entrance exam that will be held in pen-paper mode, after the decision was withdrawn. National Testing Agency conducts NEET UG, which is the only exam which is being conducted in OMR-based mode.
Schedule of NEET UG exam
The online application process for NEET UG is scheduled to commence on December 2, 2019. The procedure will conclude on December 31, 2019. Candidates will be able to download admit cards from March 27, 2020 onwards. The NEET examination will be conducted on May 3, 2020. The result will be declared on June 4, 2010.
About National Eligibility cum Entrance Test
NEET is held for admissions to nearly 66,771 MBBS and 27,148 BDS seats in medical and dental colleges of India. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), however, are outside NEET ambit, as they conduct their own exams for undergraduate (UG) admissions. Scores obtained in NEET are also used for admission to AYUSH, B.Sc and AH medical courses. In NEET 2019, over fifteen lakh candidates applied for the national level medical entrance test, making it among the most competitive examinations.
Proposal for conducting only 1 medical entrance test
Separate examinations are held by AIIMS and JIPMER. However, the recently passed bill by the parliament, the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, which now replaces Medical Council of India Bill, had suggested conducting only one medical entrance exam and doing away with separate entrance tests. A formal announcement in this regard is still awaited.
Along with NEET UG, schedule for All India Ayush Post Graduate Entrance Test (AIAPGET) 2020 has also been announced by NTA. The application process for AIAPGET 2020 will start from January 1, and the last day is January 31, 2020.
