IIT Madras campus placements: 15% rise in 2018-19, 21 international offers made

New Delhi, April 30: Witnessing one more successful year in campus placements with a jump of fifteen per cent in 2018-19, and a total of 964 students getting placed in top Indian and international firms, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has broken the previous records. Out of these, as many as 97 students have received Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs), the official statement mentions. Two phases were held for campus placements at the Institute with Phase I conducted from December 1 to 8, 2018 and Phase II that commenced in the second half of January 2019 and concluded now.

Nearly 1,300 students registered for the campus placements. Placement of 964 shows a rise of more than fifteen per cent as compared with the last year when a total of 834 students got recruited, including PPOs. The total number of PPOs has also increased this year with as many as 136 offers made during this year, as against 114 in the previous year.

Top 5 recruiters

Large firms such as Microsoft, Qualcomm and Goldman Sachs extended their offers to the students. The Top Five Recruiters for 2018-19 were: Micron – 26 offers, Intel India Technology Pvt. Ltd – 26 offers, Citibank – 23 offers, Microsoft – 22 offers, and Qualcomm – 21 offers.

“This year saw a large number of profiles from companies in the data sciences and analytics sector, which clearly depicts the current industry trends. As many as 59 offers were explicitly for data science positions. Our post-graduate placement record also continues to be excellent, with a total of 364 students getting placed (excluding MBA) as against 274 last year,” Prof. Manu Santhanam, Advisor, Training and Placement, IIT Madras, has been quoted as saying to a national daily.

21 global offers extended to students

Students received as many as 1,146 offers (including 136 PPOs) from 298 companies during 2018-19 campus placements. There were a total of 21 international offers among these. IIT Madras has witnessed an all-time high this year.

The ‘Graduation Outcome Score,’ comprising placement of graduate students is among the major contributors for the Institute’s top position in engineering category for the fourth consecutive time in India rankings 2019 of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD). Moreover, the IIT has also secured the first position in the ‘Overall Institutions’ category of India rankings for the first time.
