IIT Hyderabad-incubated startup launches electric two-wheelers for Indian conditions

New Delhi, May 2: An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad-incubated startup, PuREenergy, has introduced its high-performance, long-range electric Pure EV two-wheelers that are especially designed for Indian roads.

Startup launches 4 models

The IIT startup has launched four models-Egnite, Etrance, Epluto and Etron, and it targets to bring more than ten thousand electric vehicles on road during 2019-20. A network of channel partners has been developed by it, and plans have been made to commercially launch across the country in May 2019.

Incubated by IIT Hyderabad, Pure EV is the electric vehicle vertical of PuREnergy. It is into manufacturing high-performance Lithium batteries. For large scale production of electric vehicles and electric batteries, an eighteen thousand square feet co-located facility has been developed by the company with the IIT.

PuREenergy was set up in 2016 by Nishanth Dongari, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, IIT Hyderabad. It is now led by Rohit Vadera, who is an alumnus of IIT Bombay.

“We have developed strong capabilities in the lithium battery pack assembly, active balancing management systems and rigorous testing standards for deployment in our electric two-wheelers. We are working in the Institute for further development of active thermal management systems, vehicle aerodynamics, and lighter weight faster chargers. This will enable us to launch high-speed electric vehicles in the future,” Nishanth Dongari has been quoted as saying to a national daily.

“The company has extended collaboration with other EV startups to develop and supply high voltage lithium batteries for three and four-wheeler applications,” he added.

Hundreds of test samples have been deployed by Pure EV across India in the past one year to several distributors, corporate firms and professional test riders.

“We have obtained Automotive Research Association of India approvals for electric bikes and two-wheelers. The company has invested a significant amount of resources for on-road testing the products for their market readiness. Our electric vehicles offer cost savings over traditional ICE vehicles with running costs as low as 5 paise/km. We are working actively for channel development and aim to deploy more than 10,000 units of our various models in the current financial year,” Rohit Vadera, Chief Executive Officer, PURE EV, told a news daily.
