IIT Delhi opens Centre of Excellence for CFD at its campus

New Delhi, May 9: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has opened a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for the promotion of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at its campus. This has given a big boost to the solutions to engineering problems using data analysis and data structures. IITD Director, Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao and Rafiq Somani, Area Vice President, India and South Asia, ANSYS, attended the inaugural function among others.

Collaboration aims to improve employability of PhD candidates

The CFD is now a part of the IIT’s Corporate Social Responsibility Agreement with ANSYS Software, which is the Indian arm of the US-based software developer. “ANSYS Software will fund the 3-year project to be carried out by the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer at IIT Delhi,” Somani has been quoted as saying to a national daily. “This collaboration will improve the employability of PhD candidates and equip them with industry-relevant knowledge and skills in CFD that can result in more environment-friendly solutions for the future,” he added.

What is Computational Fluid Dynamics?

CFD is a tool that data structures and analysis for translating solutions to several engineering problems into procedures or products in an economic and faster manner. It permits simulations of engineering procedures, cutting across different disciplines, from automobile, power generation, aerospace, defence, chemical and mechanical engineering down to biomedical processes.

“This Centre will impart education to undertake cutting-edge research in Computational Fluid Dynamics and to harness the power of CFD-based simulation tools for the development of efficient and innovative products/processes,” Prof. Vivek V. Buwa, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Delhi, who is the coordinator for the CoE, told the media.

The project is aimed at the promotion of education and research in CFD while improving the employability of PhD scholars with a focus on female scholars.
