IGNOU introduces course on Goods and Services Tax

New Delhi, May 2: An awareness programme on Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been launched by Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU) School of Management Studies in collaboration with Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Institute Limited. Basic knowledge and skills needed to fulfill the several requirements under the GST Act will be imparted by the programme.

The admission procedure for this programme is scheduled to begin from July 2019.

According to IGNOU, the GST programme will be helpful to those who are involved in the maintenance of accounts and filing of various indirect tax returns. It will be focused on imparting skills to book keeping professionals for file several regular GST returns and different compliance requirements.

“Entrepreneurs engaged in small-scale business ventures can also benefit from this programme as it gives an overview of the procedures and formalities to comply under the GST Act,” the official statement states.

To join the programme, candidates must have passed Class 12. The language of the course will be English. The study material will be divided into small seven modules, which will be available in online mode only.

Duration of course

Minimum two months and maximum six months; offered in both January and July cycle of admissions.

Certificate programme in Fashion Design also launched this year

In January this year, a certificate programme in Fashion Design was also introduced by the IGNOU’s School of Vocational Education and Training. The course targets to make the students ready for employability in the Indian apparel industry. A labour intensive industry, the Indian Apparel Industry offers jobs to more than 45 million people directly and 60 million people indirectly (IBEF, 2017). Because of the plentiful supply of labour at a comparatively lower cost, the country enjoys a relative advantage in this industry.

About Indira Gandhi National Open University

IGNOU was established by an Act of Parliament in 1985. It focuses on increasing the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) by offering high-quality teaching through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode. It started offering two academic programmes in 1987- Diploma in Management and Diploma in Distance Education. The strength of students was 4,528 at that time.
