New Delhi, Dec 12: The Delhi-based Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) has embroiled into a controversy after it set a question for third semester law examination which reportedly hurt the sentiments of the minority community.
The Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into the matter after the incident came into light through social media.
The controversial question
In the question paper of the Law of Crimes-I examination held on December 7, there was a question: “Ahmed, a Muslim kills a cow in a market in the presence of Rohit, Tushar, Manav and Rahul, who are Hindus. Has Ahmed committed any offence?”
Students of ten colleges, which offer the LLB course and affiliated to GGSIPU, received the controversial question paper.
Two days after the exam, a Supreme Court lawyer identified as Bilal Anwar Khan tweeted an image of the question paper, which went viral overnight.
“Here is a new normal, de-humanising an entire community. A law college at Narela, NCR’s third-semester question paper,” he tweeted.
The lawyer was referring to the GGSIPU-affiliated Chandra Prabhu Jain (CPJ) College of Higher Studies and School of Law at Narela.
Reaction of the university and the govt
Soon after Khan’s tweet went viral, the university “regretted” the question and said it has deleted the question and the students will not be evaluated on their answer to it.
The GGSIPU Registrar, Satnam Singh, said that the varsity “regretted the error” and “as of now the question stands deleted”.
He said that from now onwards, the university will issue an advisory to the examiners asking not to draft such type of questions. Singh also said that it is bad to “connect anything to any religion”.
However, an official of the GGSIPU’s examination department said that such questions should be asked so that students can correlate legal provision with the facts of the society.
He said that such questions reflect what is happening in the society and should be seen only from academic perspective.
Terming the incident as “very bizarre” which is an “attempt to disturb the harmony of society”, Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia ordered an investigation into the matter.
He said that the government will not tolerate such misconduct and strongest action will be taken against the guilty.
