New Delhi, May 10: Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM-N) said on Thursday that it has begun implementing ten per cent quota for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in the general category from its 2019-21 session.

Parliament passed the Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill on providing ten per cent reservation in jobs and education to the poor students of the general category in January this year.

Seats at the premier B-school have been increased for the new session to 130 from 120. An official at the institute said that of these, four will be filled under this provision.
“We have begun implementing the scheme by increasing our intake to 130 for 2019-20 on account of infrastructure constraints. We will implement the full 10 per cent quota by2020-21 in accordance with the government’s guidelines,” IIM-N Director L S Murty has been quoted as saying to a national daily.
As per the release, all the government undertakings and centrally-funded educational institutions have been directed by the Centre to implement the quota. However, the standards for the execution in educational institutes are yet to be formulated.
The shortlisted candidates have been given a format by the IIM allowing them to submit details of their family income and assets to facilitate the same. Only after this, they will be considered under the EWS quota. Admission portal of the Institute facilitates them to upload the assets and income certificate along with offering a window to make necessary changes.
“The criteria for a candidate to be categorised as economically weaker are in accordance with the centrally stipulated directions. Persons who are not covered under the scheme of quota for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes and whose families have a gross annual income below Rs. 8 lakh are to be identified as economically weaker for the benefit of reservation,” the release stated.
Candidates should also provide complete information about the income including details of earnings from all sources for the fiscal prior to the year of application. It includes salary, agriculture, business, profession, etc.
Moreover, irrespective of the family income, those students whose family owns five acres or above of agricultural land, one thousand square feet or above of residential flat in notified municipalities, two hundred square yards or above of residential plot in areas other than the notified municipalities, will be excluded.
