Delhi government schools admission: Residency clause under court scanner

New Delhi, May 11: After the Delhi government made residence in Delhi compulsory for admission in government schools, children are approaching the court who were denied admission on this ground.

130 children approach High Court

As many as 130 children approached the Delhi High Court through NGO Social Jurist last month. They appealed that they should be granted admission. An inquiry was ordered by the court into these cases. The Directorate of Education (DoE) submitted an affidavit to the court on their admission status after that. According to the affidavit, only four children were denied admission due to non-availability of residence proof in Delhi, the DoE stated. Of these, three had addresses in Bihar and one in Haryana.

17 students denied admission

Due to lack of transfer certificates and school-leaving certificates, a total of seventeen children were denied admission citing “formalities”. DoE shared that once their parents complete the required formalities, these children would be given admission.

Two children, who were found to be too old, are also in the list. They had applied for admission to Class 9 but were found to be 21 months and 33 months overage. They were asked to take Class 10 exams through National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).

Ten students, who were seeking admission in primary classes of Delhi government schools, were denied admission on the grounds that these classes were already full owing to “limited seats”. The DoE said that it would ensure their admission in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) schools.

38 children did not turn up for admissions

DoE said that as many as 56 students of the remaining children are admitted to different schools, while a total of 38 children did not appear for the admissions. Moreover, three children are seeking admission in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) schools.
