New Delhi, Nov 24: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the setting up of a medical college at Silvassa in the Union Territory (UT) of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
The college will be set up at a capital cost of Rs 189 crore, which will be incurred in two years – Rs 114 crore in 2018-19 and Rs 75 crore in 2019-20.
Project will be completed by 2019-20
It would yearly intake 150 students, according to an official press release.
The project will be completed by 2019-20 and the construction and capital expenditure will be incurred as per the norms of Medical Council of India (MCI) norms and extant guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The annual recurring expenditure for the Medical College shall be managed within the budget provision for the UT.
There would be 21 regular posts of 14 joint secretary level and above, which include teaching and non-teaching staff, out of 357 regular posts which were recommended by the Committee on Establishment Expenditure (CEE).
The college will benefit tribal and rural students
The setting up of the college will increase the availability of doctors and address the issue of shortage of doctors. It will enhance medical education opportunities to students of the two UTs. It will also result in optimal utilization of the existing infrastructure of district hospitals and improve tertiary care facilities for the people of the region and the adjoining areas.
The medical college will benefit the students, especially those of tribal and rural areas of the two UTs, which will promote social equity. Health equity will be promoted by provision of better services through improvement in the strength of doctors in the UTs.
A brief overview of the education sector in Dadra & Nagar Haveli
The union territory in the western India has a number of good colleges like Dr Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Government Polytechnic, Nagar Haveli; Pramukh Swami Institute of Information Technology, Silvassa; SSR College of Education, which offers Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree and Diploma in Education (DEd); SSR College of Pharmacy; and SSR Colleges of Arts, Commerce and Science.
Dr B B A Government Polytechnic (Engineering College), Karad is the first college that was established in Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The duration of the courses in the college is three years and it imparts technical training to the students in the streams of mechanical, civil and electrical engineering.
