‘Centre to Set up World-class National Police University Soon,’ Union Minister Kishan Reddy Informs Lok Sabha

New Delhi, November 20: With the objective to provide intense training, research and development and policy-making, the Central government is planning to establish a world-class National Police University in Greater Noida soon, Minister of State of Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy informed Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Focus on policing, law enforcement

With the funding from the Government of India, the university will work in the domains of education and research such as policing, law enforcement and related areas of internal security and public safety.

“In the first instance, the university would offer courses in Police Sciences, Cyber Forensics, Risk Management and Criminology,” Minister of State of Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy said in Lok Sabha.

The minister stated that the functioning of the University is incumbent upon the Legislation of the National Police University Bill in the Parliament.

Modernisation of Police

“For Modernisation of Police, Central Government allocates funds as support incentive to State Governments for implementation of Police reforms, under the scheme of ‘Assistance to States for Modernisation of Police’,” he added.

Highlighting the salient features of the plan of the government, the minister said under the Modernisation of Police Forces vertical, central assistance will be provided to the State Governments for weapons, equipment for Forensics, Information Technology, Communication, Training, etc.

Construction of police infrastructure

“To facilitate targeted interventions, ‘mobility’ and ‘construction of police infrastructure including housing’ are permitted only in cases of Jammu and Kashmir, insurgency affected North Eastern (NE) States and Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected districts,” he added. The minister also stated that the university will help in modernisation of police and police reforms.

In September this year, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had also issued a statement, saying a world-class National Police University (NPU) will be set-up in Greater Noida with a dynamic, state-of-the-art learning and working environment for the advancement and dissemination of education and research in policing science and related areas.

The proposed multi-disciplinary university will be established at a prime location in the NCR region on a plot of 100 acres located at IT Park, Tech zone in Greater Noida, the MHA said in a statement.

The MHA had said that the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has offered land on a 90-year lease at a concessional rate at the cost of Rs 371 crore.
