Allahabad University bolsters security after April episode

Allahabad, May 2: The Allahabad University has prepared a proposal to revamp its campus security, following a spate of violent incidents and disturbances in the recent times. The university has drawn up a security proposal in consultation with police officials to ramp up security arrangements in all its four campuses.

The shocking incidents which rocked the university in April 2019 has forced the authorities to crack down on illegal inmates in hostels and keep a regular check on the campuses. Last month, police had raided the Tarachand and PCB hostels on the university campus and recovered material used in making crude bombs, a fake pistol and large number of empty liquor bottles. The raid was conducted after police followed the investigation trail related to the murder of a former student Rohit Shukla at PC Bannerjee Hostel.

Single point entry for all campuses

The university authorities are reportedly contemplating allowing a single-point entry at all the campuses and construction of fences at the university’s main campus. Such security initiatives had earlier been mooted by the executive council of the Allahabad University, however, they was not implemented.

The new security plan has been drafted in a meeting attended by the university’s chief proctor Prof RS Dubey, registrar, CO Colonelganj Shrish Chandra and Inspector Colonelganj, and the presence of porous periphery of the campuses, especially the Arts campus, was discussed. The new plan envisages allowing single entry points to different campuses, and the entry points of the Arts campus including the one from Union hall, KPUC hostel, Library gate, the one behind department of Ancient history, etc. is being restricted.

Guards to check ID cards of visitors

The Chief Proctor said the university will allow students to enter only from KPUC gate, while the administrative staff and the employees would be allowed to enter through the Library gate. The new initiatives aims setting up of a guardroom to check the I-cards of visitors, besides it will issue gate passes to every visitor into the campuses. It is also being discussed to raise the boundary walls of the campuses to make them more effective. Some entry points will have high definition CCTV camera’s CCTV, to monitor all the activities and assist law enforcement in case of any security incident.

The university said it will not allow students to eat at the messes not allotted to them, they can only use the mess of their respective hostel. Moreover, the new rules prohibit the outsiders from entering the hostel premises after 9pm, also the inmates can’t enter after 10pm.

In light of the recent raids of the police, the university claims the Holland Hall is still controlled by outsiders and criminals, and the administration, therefore, has requested the law enforcement to help them in complete eviction of the hostel.
