IIM CAT Cutoff
CAT Cutoff for Top B-schools

CAT Cutoff: Every year, the Indian Institutes of Management(IIMs) and other top business schools in India release the CAT cutoff for test takers who appear for CAT. The IIM CAT cutoff 2018 is the minimum percentile that candidates have to score to be eligible for the next rounds of the selection process conducted by each IIM and other management programmes. The cut off is determined for both the section-wise percentile and the overall score of the test taker. Many IIMs and top business schools declare the minimum IIM CAT cutoff before the exam, so that students can have a idea of the percentile range within which they have to score to be called for interview by their dream business school.

The 180-minute CAT exam is for over 2 lakh candidates annually. The test comprises three sections- Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension(VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DI &LR) and Quantitative Ability (QA). Once candidates are shortlisted on the basis of CAT cut off, they are called for further rounds of the selection process including Group Discussion(GD), Personal Interview(PI) and Written Ability Test(WAT). Candidates who clear all the rounds are offered admission to some of the best business programmes in the country. In this article, we will take you through the minimum IIM CAT cutoff 2018 for the top IIMs as well other business schools.

IIM CAT cutoff 2018: Highlights

Before we proceed with the details regarding the minimum cut off, it is important to understand certain aspects of IIM CAT cutoff. Here are few highlights  of CAT cut off:

  1. The IIM CAT cut off for the old IIMs are usually higher than the new IIMs. At business schools like IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, FMS Delhi, the cut off crosses 99 percentile.
  2. Those that consider students at 90 or above percentile maybe the new IIMs like Udaipur, Trichy, Rohtak, Ranchi etc.
  3. There are some business schools which accept students scoring 60 to 80 percentile. However, these schools maybe in the two to three tier slots in terms of ranking.
  4. Clearing the IIM CAT cutoff 2018 does not guarantee students admission at a top business school. Even if you have 100 percentile, you have to clear the other rounds devised by the business school to be finally offered a seat.
  5. Students also have to make sure that they clear both the sectional and overall CAT cutoffs to be selected to the business schools where they have applied.
  6. The cut off that the business school declares before the result are only the expected or minimum cut off. The actual cut off might differ after the CAT results are declared.

IIM CAT Cutoff: Factors determining cut off

There are certain factors which determine the final cut off of CAT. Given these factors, the CAT cutoff of some of the business schools differ annually. The biggest determining factor is usually the difficulty level of the aptitude test. Some of the determining factors of the cut off are listed below:

  1. Number of test takers
  2. Level of difficulty
  3. The ranking of the institute. As mentioned above, old IIMs and top business schools demand high CAT scores
  4. Number of test takers qualifying for the next rounds
  5. Number of seats at the business school

The IIM CAT cutoff also depends on the caste category of the test taker. The percentile requirement for General category students is usually higher than that demanded from students of other categories like OBC, SC and ST. A lot also depends on the programme for which the student has applied. The two-year PGDM or MBA programmes are very competitive and hence demand high scores from the students.
